The above are part of my Lesson #4 work in Jane Davies '100 Drawings on Cheap Paper' online workshop. This workshop, despite it's name, is a serious class in process. The object is to pursue, within Jane's guidelines, variety in all aspects of mark-making.
Working on at least ten 'drawings' at a time has forced me not to get too precious about each mark, and to allow more freedom of expression. We are not expected to complete a 'finished' work of art, but to get in touch with the muse within ourselves. It's working for me.
For ten weeks I'll be 'playing'....and loving it.
Meanwhile there is some serious painting going on as well.

Wow, these are so care-free and just pure joy to look at. I feel like my eyes have gone for a wonderful waltz. Beautiful. I agree with you about online workshops. They really are a good thing. Love your last abstract too. It's like looking at reflection on water.

ReplyDeleteI responded to your classwork in class - it was a challenging lesson for me but you knocked it out of the park. Can I just say I think your reflections piece is dynamite?! My goodness! I love it and love how the colors in the reflection hint at even more what's on the shore since they're so long. A great piece!
ReplyDeleteI'm taking the fall session of this class and I can't wait. The non-precious aspect of such a large body of work is very appealing, and I'm always looking for ways to loosen up my mark making. The work you've been doing has been very inspiring!

I remember in school, the first day of life drawing we all sketched so diligently.. and when we were done, the instructor came by and collected all our charcoal sketches and ripped them up and put them in the bin.. and said... do it again... that ended precious for me!! Nice work.. you do... always

The mark making in the Drawings on Cheap Paper workshop is really inspiring. I have always wanted to complete more art tutorials but finding the time after work and caring for the family just seemed impossible. But actually doing an art tutorial online never occurred to me, so thanks for opening this as a new possibility in my life.
