Line, Shape...etc.

Jane Davies online class 'Extreme Composition' is awesome, and really making me work. Have just completed Lesson 2  (of 7) and here is my final composition so far....

The first lesson had us doing exercises in variety of line, and relating those lines to a painted background.  The second lesson added shape to the mix, leading us on an exploration of varying shape and line in a composition .

This is my very first real online workshop, rather than just a demo, but it certainly wont be my last.  It's hard to believe that this is as good as a REAL workshop...but it is.  Lots of work, great critiques from both classmates and teacher, and you get to see and comment on everyone else's work.

In the process of just the last two weeks I have a studio full of painted papers, all destined to be part of future works...either cut up or reworked.  Fabulous!!!

Another five weeks to go....busy, busy, busy...and happy, happy, happy.

  1. I love those colors, and the WHITE going through! That's one of my favorite things, to add white. This looks very organic and like stone in a way.

  2. I like the visual depth. And I agree, I like the white as well! Especially the organic connecting loops. It makes the painting appear to continue past its borders.

  3. How nice to take a really good on line class ... like a "real" class a good teacher who knows their stuff makes all the difference!
There is so much depth and interest to this piece Jo...you must be pleased with how it turned out!

  14. I'm so envious that you're taking Jane's class - I believe my friend Karen is as well and I just love everything both of you are sharing. I got to take a class from Jane in person last fall and it was fab! Soon as Dan gets a job, I'm signing up for this online one! The use of white in your painting is such a good counterpoint to the more muted colors....for some reason I always reach for black as the 'accent' color, but I may have to try white once in awhile - this looks excellent.
